Louise Denton is a passionate Northern Territory landscape photographer, renowned for capturing the essence of the unique NT landscape. Louise strives to evoke the feeling of the magical NT landscapes, creating images that encapsulate the ever-changing natural canvas.
Louise Denton Photography began its journey in 2011 when Louise set up a stall at the iconic Mindil Beach Markets in Darwin. What started as a humble beginning has blossomed into the vibrant gallery you see today at Darwin Waterfront.
“Originally, I'm from a town in the UK called Stourbridge, I studied at the University of Sheffield and afterwards decided to take a Gap Year to Australia and Asia. I travelled for around 18 months before I arrived in Darwin and instantly fell in love with the place; the lifestyle, weather, the natural beauty, the people and just the unexplainable feeling that comes with the NT. My “Gap Year” never ended! I left the UK in 2008 and have been in Darwin since 2009. I think I'm nearly a local?!”
Louise has continuously honed her skills, photographing far and wide all over the Territory. No hike is too far and there is no such thing as too many nights in a tent! Continually refining her photography techniques and exploring as much as possible, all in an effort to capture and share the Northern Territory's breathtaking landscapes.
“I feel incredibly lucky to be living in a place I love the Top End is a photographer’ paradise. It’s also the perfect base for bushwalkers, campers and nature lovers in general - Darwin and I are a great fit!”
Louise finds endless inspiration in the vast and ever-changing landscapes of the Northern Territory. She is captivated by the region's resilience, which she strives to translate into her photography. Louise’s artwork is characterized by deep compositions, rich colours, and a remarkable ability to convey the mood and atmosphere of each location.
“I am regularly asked when is my favourite time to photograph, and without a doubt it is the wet season. Incredible skies, clouds and storms create a dramatic light that is just not possible in the dry season. Thundering waterfalls, a fluorescent green landscape and less people around all make for special photographic opportunities. Don’t get me wrong, I love the dry season too but wet season is always an adventure!”
Where photography came in
“I have been lucky enough to have seen some absolutely spectacular parts of Australia. Back in my backpacker days I decided to teach myself how to capture landscape photos to truly reflect the incredible landscapes I was seeing. I bought a Canon 450D and the obsession began! Many, many hours of exploring, shooting and learning. I have stuck with Canon over the years, upgrading to a 5D Mark III and then the 50MP 5DSr.
Now, I still use the Canon 5DSr but my main camera is a Fujifilm GFX100S medium format digital camera for my landscape artwork.”
